I’m Alaynah.
I’m an optometrist with a first-class Master of Optometry degree and a Professional Certificate in Medical Retina. Alongside clinical practice, I have five years of tutoring experience and have always loved finding the explanation that finally makes something click.
I created Optom Mastery because optometry education should feel supportive, practical and human. Confidence doesn’t come from memorising more—it comes from understanding why, applying knowledge safely and having space to ask every question.
Why Optom Mastery
I wanted to create what I needed as a student.
Throughout university, I was always researching beyond the surface and asking why things happened—not because everything came easily, but because understanding the connections was the only way the information truly stayed with me.
I remember how overwhelming optometry could feel when it seemed like a mountain of disconnected facts. Optom Mastery grew from the guides, explanations and learning methods I created for myself, shaped into support that helps other students learn clearly, think clinically and build lasting confidence.
The experience behind the teaching
Recent experience, genuine understanding.
I graduated with a first-class Master of Optometry degree and received the award for achieving the highest results in my cohort, before completing my pre-registration journey and the Professional Certificate in Medical Retina. Because I went through university and pre-reg so recently, I still remember the pressure, the uncertainty and the moments when I knew what I needed to learn but did not know where to begin. I understand what students are facing, what assessors expect and which explanations genuinely make difficult material click.
Clinically, I have a special interest in dry eye and photobiomodulation. My Master’s research explored photobiomodulation, and I now independently deliver specialist dry-eye treatments in practice. I bring that same balance of evidence, clinical application and clear communication into everything I teach.
I have been tutoring for around six years and have successfully supported more than 20 students, from GCSE English through to university and pre-registration. GCSE English is my specialist school subject, while dissertation work became another particular interest of mine during university. Although a dissertation can sound daunting, it became one of my favourite parts of my degree, and I achieved 76% in mine. Its focus was Charles Bonnet syndrome—an area that remains a key interest of mine. I still spend time unpicking research papers on CBS and exploring its complex relationship with dementia and cognitive impairment. Making sense of complicated evidence and turning it into something clear has always been my forte. The key is breaking a large project into manageable stages, and that is something we can work through together. I can support you with planning, research, structure, critical writing and refinement, and I am also creating dedicated dissertation resources. Keep checking the resource shop for new additions.
